Once you have a Red Bag Delivery you will never forget it.
This is Southern Hearts Egyptian Nefertari. She was a Red Bag Delivery. The Mare was not a maiden mare.

On the night that she was born April 5th 2003. We had just finished a late dinner. The Barn cam was on and as I logged on to my colorfulminiaturehorses, yahoo egroup, I was watching Annie in the barn as she was due at any time now.
Sense she was just standing there I continued to talk to some of my friends online. A short time later Bill walked by the monitor and said Annie was laying down and pushing. I jumped up and ran to the barn, with not a moment to spare and Bill fast on my heels. We have only missed one delivery and that was long ago with our big Quarter horses. From then on we have never missed one.Anyways, I went into Annie's stall, she was still down and pushing, but I felt that there was something wrong, then I saw this big red bubble starting to emerge from her. I had never had a red Bag delivery, but from a photo that Carol Zills had sent me one time, Thank goodness she did.
I knew right then and there we were in for the long haul. My first thought was to call the vet and ran out the stall and stopped short. "No! I can't call the vet, there is no time for that!" Your thoughts begin to search every corner of your mind for anything that you have read on this subject and the fact is you just have to do what you feel is right at the time. Its scary and there is a life that you have to save and there is no time to really be thinking, just doing! Bill and I watched Annie and as the big red bubble came out more, I tore it open and then I could see the white amniotic membrane under that. I waited for it to come out more and then when I could see 2 front feet I tore it open and low and behold all the ambotic fluid came gushing out onto me, soaking me, but that was a minor thing when you are trying to save a foals life. This foal has no life support and you must get it out as fast as you can!

As Annie pushed I pulled and as soon as the head appeared, I cleaned out the nose. The foal slipped right out after that and I rubbed her briskly and she started to breath. Thank God! What a great sign. I let the foal lay there for just a bit as I was all bloody and gee with the rush to get to the barn, Bill and I forgot everything. Bill offered his T-shirt and took it off so I could clean up my hands a bit. Poor Bill was shivering after that as it was cool out. But after he knew everything was fine he ran to the house to get a clean shirt. Well when the foal was born the placenta came out too right along with the foal. I tied the placenta in a knot hoping that the weight would snap the Umbilical cord when the foal stood. Nope it did not. Up till then, I had never tied and cut an umbilical before and was really beginning to get stressed now. What was I to do. I was sure there wasn't enough time to go read my book on foaling and much less find it right away! Then I remembered I was online to my wonderful Colorfulminiaturehorse egroup. I ran up to the house while Bill watch and cared for the foal and asked for help and whos online.
I got several replys from many people on what to do and how to tie and cut the cord. I will always be greatful to them girls on the Color List. It was like I wasn't alone anymore knowing that they were there to help. So back to the barn I ran with iodine, string and the knife and tied and cut the cord. The foal was up and nursing and what a great night it was at the Southern Heart Ranch. Help is never too far away when you have a computer and an egroup of wonderful people. Thanks you girls on the Color list for all your help. I also would like to say thank you to my wonderful hubby for all the help and holding me when it was all over and lending a sholder to cry on! Once you have a Red Bag Delivery you will never forget it.
Here is Southern Hearts Egyptian Nefertari, She has now grown and will be 3 years old come April 5th 2006. She has been sold. She would also like to say Thank-you to the Colorfulminiaturehorse list girls.
