Red Bag Delivery Part 2
( photo right ) is of a mare that was induced to deliver. As often happens when we induce parturition in mares she had a “red bag” delivery and the chorio-allantois membrane presented at her vulva.
This is a similar situation as in the above photo, except this mare decided to deliver standing up. Here, Gary J. Nie is about to rupture the “red bag” (chorio-allantois).

This is shortly after the “red bag” was ruptured. You can see the edge of the ruptured chorio-allantois and the glistening white amnionic membrane that is still intact. The fetus is obviously still inside the amnionic sac.

This photo shows Gary J. Nie and his assistant, assisting in delivery so this mare doesn’t drop the fetus on the floor. You can see the edge of the chorio-allantois and the amnionic membrane has now been ruptured.

This photo to the right shows the placenta laid out for inspection. The chorio-allantois is in the correct orientation as it would exist during pregnancy in a mare’s uterus. The dark red, velvety surface is visible. You can also see the thinner white, amnionic membrane still attached to the vascular and membranous structures as they course inside the chorio-allantois where they connect to its inner surface.

Photo to the left shows the chorio-allantois inverted with the smooth surface visible. You can better see the vascular and membranous attachments (extension of the umbilical structures connecting the amnionic membrane to the chorio-allantois.
