Breech Birth
When things go terribly wrong
Thank you to Mr & Mrs Prince of Atkins, Tx for allowing me to add these pictures to my site
A Breech Birth is when the hind end and the tail of the foal is coming first and the two back legs are up underneath the foal.
What this means is that the foal is in the uterus backwards. The feet are facing down towards the mares feet, the head is facing forward towards the mares head.
In this mare, her water broke and she did not have contractions, meaning that she never had the urge to push.Time is of the essence during foaling. The Vet was called, but the foal was lost. We also do not know if the foal had died of suffocation waitng for the Vet to arrive or that it was already passed on when the mares water broke.
In any event this was a sad day for the Prince's. May you rest in peace sweet baby

Vet gives mare saline flush with antibiotics
The mare sleeping soundly. When she woke up she didn't even know she had had a foal and did not look for one.
The mare is doing great and will not be rebred.
She will be in for a life of being spoiled and all the love that she can handle
